Vaalkloof Private Nature Reserve

The 4x4 Route is a circular route of 40km, starting at the farmstead, and climbing from 670m above sea level to 1400m above sea level. After 4km, on the two-wheel track, you arrive at the foot of the mountain through the Karoo veld. From here it is a four-wheel drive route, that gains height southerly, as far as to the top of the Bont Berg, with its 300 hectare plateau. There are a few places where a low gear ratio is essential. The view over the Ceres Karoo and the Touws River Plain is unforgettable and incredibly enchanting.

You find yourself on the watershed between two oceans. Then the more difficult part of the route starts — from here the downhill trail twists through exceptional rock formations, to the foot ofKerneelsKloof with the Seerpootjie Hut. The route then leads east up the mountain where you drive through Echo Kloof along a zigzag road, before the route spirals back down to the Karoo plains.

We have several trails from one hour to three hours, ranging from grade 2 to grade 5. The trails are interesting and varied and one must negotiate rocky slopes, river crossings, steep ascents and some really tough terrain. While certain parts of the trails are quite daunting and good off-road experience is necessary, there are alternatives for the less adventurous. We also encourage you to stop en-route to enjoy the rugged beauty of the mountains.

There are several other good 4x4 trails in the area and arrangements can be made for you to enjoy these trails as well, time permitting.

Louvain Guestfarm’s 4x4 routes are legendary. From the challenging Forest drive to thepanoramic views across the valleys to the coastline on the Oxwagon trail, there certainly is something here for everyone who loves nature and good times.

Forest Drive

The Forest Drive is a natural obstacle course in and around a riverbed in a blackwood forest. The circular track can only be driven in an anti-clockwise direction due to the high grade of difficulty of some of the ascents/descents. Obstacles with names like “the Gorge” and “the Donga” make this route suitable only for experienced drivers in proper low range 4x4’s with maximum ground clearance.

The Forest drive is a popular venue for 4x4 competitions and training, or anybody who likes to test his 4x4 and own driving abilities.

Cost per vehicle: R150

Old Voortrekker pass Oxwagon trail

This historical oxwagon route dates back to 1776 when it was used by pioneers as a trade route between the coast and the Langkloof valley.

Enjoy magnificent views of the Indian ocean, the lakes around Wilderness and Sedgefield and the verdant Langkloof valley.

The 30km route starts on Louvain Guestfarm and ends at the entrance of the Bergplaas Forestry station on the Seven Passes road between George and Knysna. It takes approximately two and a half hours to complete, and is enjoyable and scenic without being unduly demanding.

permit is required to enter the forestry area and the cost hereof is included in our price of R200 per vehicle.

Tafelkop 4 x 4

In the Karoo, Montagu valley, lies a hidden treasure - Our scenic fruit, citrus and wine farm,Scheepersdraai, (named after general Scheepers who, together with his troops, travelled across the farm in the South African Boere War) offers you both the excitement of 4x4 action and the stillness of peaceful accommodation.

Scheepersdraai provides delicious sun-dried fruit throughout the year and fresh fruit is available, in season, 10 months a year. Farm life can be enjoyed to the full. Planting and pruning happens in winter. An intense display of seemingly endless pink and bright wild flowers and blossoms can be enjoyed during spring. Further processing and drying of fruit are done in the summer. In autumn and winter you are invited to enjoy citrus straight from the tree. A wide variety of animals, including duiker, grysbok, jackal, rooikat, baboon, black eagle ('witkruis'), crow, guineafowl, francolin ('fisant&patrys'), and other birds can be seen. Sometimes, the unique fish-eagle call can be heard next to the river. If you are lucky you'll even see the klipspringers standing against Tafelkop while enjoying the view over Montagu valley. Typical Karoo - plants, thorn trees and succulents covers the beautiful landscape.

Our main activity, the 4x4 route stretches 10km between the 'karoo - koppies' and crosses the dry riverbed a few times. From there it climbs the bigger hills for an extraordinary view over the Langebergemountains and Montagu valley. Up here, a primitive braai facility with free wood is at your disposal, to enjoy the beauty of nature and the fresh air for an hour or two. After that it is downhill to the old building (the home of a shepard in earlier years). Here a camping ground awaits. Water is available. There are a whole lot of challenges for the serious 4x4 enthusiast, like the dry riverbed with its few big stones and puddles of water (in the winter) to make things interesting. Various mountain biking and hiking trails stretches throughout the farm. Three of the hiking trails end on top of the Langeberge mountains. At good days even the ocean can be seen from here. Try your fishing luck in one of the irrigation dams nearby. Tennis courts, a squash court, a gholf course, a bowling court and a spa are only 5 kilometres away. Three other 4x4 routes and the world renowned Montagu tractor trips are also in this area. There are a few restaurants and three wine cellars renown for its muskadel and port in this area. Visit the museum or galleries that exhibit local talent.
